WALK TWO MOONS SCHUMACHER GRADE 9 QUOTE ANALYSIS
Walk Two Moons Quote Analysis
A. “You cant keep the birds of sadness from flying over your head, but you can keep them from nesting in your hair”
· You can’t help having sadness all around you, but you can keep the sadness from getting to you, and making you sad all the time.
· Phoebe shouldn’t be so sad about her mother being gone and look on the bright side, like maybe her mother would’ve come back sooner. And Phoebe didn’t have to look for reasons why her mother was gone, she was gone. Sal didn’t let the birds of sadness nest in her head. She accepted that her mom was gone and lived like it didn’t bother her that much.
· This quote can be a lesson for my own daily life because you can’t let things bother you, you just have to like get over it. And like, with my grades, I guess I have to accept it and get over it.
B. “What I have since realized is that if people expect you to be brave, sometimes you pretend that you are, even when you are frightened down to your very bones”
· You have to like, give it your best and do what other people expect you to do. Or else you are considered weird.
· Sal always pretends like she is okay and she’s really not. So she is covering up that her mother is gone and that she likes Ben. Phoebe’s father is another one trying to be brave. He might not like the idea of Mike, and he has to pretend to like him, and accept him.
· For me, this quote means nothing. But I guess it would be a lesson in my daily life, like to try new things, and get over your fears.
C. “Don’t judge a man before you’ve walked two moons in his moccasins”
· This quote means that you can’t judge a person, if you aren’t them and you don’t know them, or what their life is like.
· Phoebe judges Mike for being with her mother. What she didn’t know at first, she called him a lunatic. Meanwhile, she doesn’t know anything about him, or who he really is. Phoebe’s mother is another one. Like phoebe judged her mom and making up reasons why she was gone. Phoebe didn’t really know what was going on in her mothers head. If she was her mother, she would definitely understand.
· This quote can be a lesson in my life because I judge people before I really know them, and I shouldn’t, because it’s “bad”. But honestly, I guess this quote is saying for us to, like, get to know people before you say anything about them.
D. “Everyone has his own agenda”
· I think this quote is trying to say that maybe the whole world doesn’t revolve around one person, and everyone has their own problems, things they have to do, and their own lives.
· Prudence and Phoebe demonstrate that everyone has their own agenda. Because 1) Prudence is really self-centered and always wants people to pay attention to her. 2) Phoebe is always talking about her mother to Sal, and she doesn’t realize that Sal has lost her own mother, and is sad also. But Sal doesn’t talk about it constantly.
· This quote can be a lesson in my life because it reminds you that people don’t only think about you, they have their own problems to worry about.
E. “My father says I lean on broken reeds and will get a face full of swamp mud one day”
· I think what this quote is trying to say is, “Im always on the edge, taking a risk, and one day, its not going to go so well.”
· Phoebe and Sal lean on broken reeds and take it to the limit all the time.
· It can be a lesson in my life because it’s saying for us to like, don’t always go too far, and be careful what we are doing.
F. “That’s like trying to catch a fish in the air”
· It’s trying to say that something is impossible. Because catching a fish in the air, is impossible.
· Sal and Mrs. Partridge are examples. Because Sals mother will never come back, and the same with Mrs. Partridge’s eyesight.
· I don’t think it could be related in my life. But I guess it applies to moving. And maybe parents breaking up. It’s something that will change your life forever, and it’s impossible for things to be like they used to.
